Adapted Doorknob

The challenge was to make an add-on part that would fix securely to the existing doorknob and allow our client to turn it easily. We decided some sort of winged shape (something like a clockwork toy or clock key) would probably do.

Can anyone explain why such small slippery doorknobs are fitted to doors expressly intended to be used by elderly clients ?

The Challenge

The challenge was to make an add-on part that would fix securely to the existing doorknob and allow our client to turn it easily. We decided some sort of winged shape (something like a clockwork toy or clock key) would probably do.

The solution

The client sent some pictures of the door handle and knob and, knowing the standard spacing of the fixing screws of these, I was able to deduce the dimensions of the knob. This avoided a journey to the client’s flat although it did have the risk that it might not fit. I 3D modelled the existing knob and then created a potential design and I emailed a picture of this to the client to consider. The client was happy so I completed the design, allowing for some opportunity to make on-site adjustments if needed. The design uses two small mouldings that are fixed to the flats on the doorknob with high strength double sided tape and then the main moulding is fitted and locks over one of these whilst the secondary moulding locks over the other side and is fixed to the main moulding with self threading plastics screws.

I visited the client and tried the assembly without the tape and, to my great pleasure, it fitted as designed. I also measured the knob for future reference. I then assembled it and asked the client to try it out. The client was delighted and stood turning the lock open and closed many times. I have heard since that it is still working well.

The door handle & knob.

The first 3D model for approval.

The side mouldings are stuck on and the main moulding is fitted in place.

The second moulding is screwed in place.

The client is operating the adapted doorknob.

The benefit

The benefit is that our client can now lock and unlock the main flat door without fear of not being able to turn the doorknob.

I understand that some other occupants of this building may require as similar adaptation. I plan to simplify the design now I have accurate dimensions.
