Cooker control guard
The client’s daughter is 11 years old and has Cornelia De Lange Syndrome, resulting in severe behavioural difficulties. These include fiddling with cooker control knobs when Mum is out of the kitchen or her back is turned.
The cooker control guard allows Mum to see and operate the cooker controls by the means of a ‘key’ whilst denying access to her daughter. This solution was inspired by another on this site but develops it further by allowing the controls to be viewed and assessed whilst the guard is in place.
The Challenge
The client wishes to stop her 11 y/o daughter from ‘fiddling’ with cooker control knobs when she is out of the kitchen or her back is turned.
Commercial solutions are either not strong enough or capable of resisting her daughter’s attempts to remove them, or will not fit this model of cooker.
Safety includes risks of burns / under or over cooked food.
The solution
This solution completely addresses the problem.
Solution uses annealed polycarbonate channel, stainless steel end fittings. Cooker knobs are drilled and Hexagon socket head screws Loctited in (2700). Cooker knobs are operated through floating guides via 5mm ball end hexagon head driver. This allows a wider range of angular misalignment between the socket head axis and that of the ball driver (25 degrees).
The benefit
The client’s daughter is now unable to access the controls, keeping them much safer. Mum is very pleased.
