Electrification of recumbent trike for 9 year old boy
Miles is a 9 year old with cerebral palsy. His father bought a recumbent trike for exercise, but he could not pedal uphill. His dad then purchased a wheel with an electric motor, battery pack, pedal sensor, controls and display module, but with no instructions or wiring to show how to install it on the trike.
The solution
REMAP Essex West modified the trike by fitting the larger wheel and motor, modifying the rear brakes and controls, fitting a pedal crank sensor and hand throttle and mounting the 48V battery and wiring. This was a challenging task because of limited space and lack of instructions. The solution needs to assist Miles in pedalling but always be safe to use without excessive speed. The hand throttle was disconnected for this reason so that he electrical power only provides assistance during pedalling to exercise his legs.
The benefit
Miles comment: “It’s awesome”
