The client is a child who uses the assistance of a paediatric standing frame (Leckey Horizon stander) at school – this is a frame designed to hold the user safely in an upright position.  The frame has a waist-level tray attachment allowing the client to do school work on this tray.  The arms by which the tray attaches to the stander are not sufficiently long, and a solution is required to allow the tray to be positioned further away.

The Challenge

The child is uncomfortable when the tray is in place, due to the standard tray being too close to the body when it is at its greatest possible distance.  There are no alternative trays or extension mechanisms commercially available.  It was suggested that a modification to the existing tray by means of extending the connecting arms would be a suitable adaptation.

The solution

The existing tray connects to the Leckey Horizon stander by means of two hollow cylindrical stainless-steel rods which are attached to the tray and are slotted into the frame once the user is in place in the stander.

It was decided to adapt these rods by adding an interior telescoped rod. Each rod has a hole drilled and, when the holes are aligned between the original and the new interior rod, a nut and bolt fix the extension bar securely.  The nut is a thumbscrew.  The new extension bars have plastic endpieces to ensure there are no sharp edges.  The extension bars are then inserted into the frame.

The benefit

The solution allows the client to continue using the Leckey Horizon stander at school without the discomfort or inconvenience of the table/tray being far too close to the body.
