Outdoor access ramps
Our client, John, has an electric scooter which he is unable to keep in his store room because of a 150mm high step at the doorway. Similarly, there is a step at the edge of the car park which he needs to negotiate to drive into town.
The Challenge
Bespoke ramps were needed. So, accurate measurements and woodworking skills were necessary to make the two ramps fit for purpose.
The solution
For both steps, ramps were made from plywood sheets screwed onto softwood bearers shaped to give a slope no steeper than 1:10. The shaping of the doorstep ramp was complicated by an angled approach and the presence of an adjacent brick step, so accurate measurement and shaping of the ramp were crucial. This ramp was held in position with two coach bolts screwed into the blockwork path beneath it. The woodwork of both ramps had been treated with two coats of Ronseal preservative.

The benefit
John is now able to store his wheelchair in his weatherproof store room. He can now easily negotiate the step to the adjacent car park, making his journeys to town easier. This project, although appearing to be a simple solution, involved some complicated woodwork, which REMAP volunteer David described as challenging but satisfying.
