Request to adapt mobility scooter
Our client’s sister, an occupational therapist, contacted us to help adapt a privately purchased mobility scooter. She wrote that her brother was using a foldable mobility scooter. However, reduced dexterity in his hands and fingers as a feature of progressive Motor Neurone Disease (MND) was reducing her brother’s ability to steer it. Currently steering his scooter using the palm of his hands and resting his arms on his knees for support was not ideal. Our client’s sister thought that something portable to raise his feet and maybe something on the handle to support the palm of his hand would be helpful.
The Challenge
Experienced REMAP volunteer Gerry Fisher recognised the constraints of this challenge. Any adaptation needed not to interfere with the chair’s automatic folding mechanism, which was operated by a push key fob.
The solution
The ingenious solution was to craft a removable wrist support made from Plywood and aluminum with vinyl-padded wrist supports.
The benefit
Job done within a short time frame – a low-risk solution and one very happy client who could now more easily steer his mobility scooter.
