Rollator arm gutter support
Our client had suffered a stroke, leaving her with a poor gait, and her right arm with a degree of pain, discomfort and reduced dexterity. A standard issue arm gutter zimmer frame was unsuitable for her. Four wheeled arm gutter rollators were too large and cumbersome around the house – and in particular the kitchen and toilet where there was reduced space to turn around. Our client’s neuro physio approached Remap to see if we could find a solution.
The solution
Harrogate and Ripon Group engineer Ian Midgley added an arm gutter support to the client’s three wheeled rollator. This comprised solid aluminium bar, and plastic guttering attached to the bar with hydraulic pipe clamps and polymorph mouldings. A soft removable pad comprising a removable and washable cotton cover containing a layer of firm EVA foam, and a layer of memory foam was attached with velcro to the gutter. The brakes on that side were moved into an upright position for comfort.
The benefit
Our client hadn’t been out of the house for a number of months, and our solution gave her the freedom and confidence to do so.

Hi Nicola – there is a link under Get Our Help to make a referral to your local Remap group. Note that this modification might not be suitable for all rollators. This particular one has the vertical handle tube running all the way down to and welded onto the bottom cross rail. There are those that do not, and they tend to have too much flex in the frame to cope with an arm gutter modification and the extra leverage of someone putting their weight on it. Regards, Ian.
My friend has cerebral palsy and was using a stick but changed to a rollator recently. She needs it adapting to have a gutter arm on instead of hand grip as she has no muscle tone in the right hand. It also needs to be higher than the other handle.
Also she needs a way to easily lift it on and off the back of her mobility scooter when going out so that she can go out independently.
Please can you consider helping her. Her stronger side has taken a battering from the many falls she has had and now that knee is weakened. She is seeking assessment for that but does not trust the tripod walking stick anymore.
