A client with MS has a toilet that has been raised to assist transfers, meaning her feet are unsupported. Because she has to spend long periods on the toilet, this is painful and a movable footrest was required. Her reduced strength means this must be motorised.  A hinged flap was made, lifted by an airbag and battery-powered tyre pump.

The Challenge

A client with MS has a toilet that has been raised to assist transfers, meaning her feet are unsupported while seated. Because she has to spend long periods on the toilet, this is painful and a movable footrest was required. Her reduced strength means it must be motorised.

The solution

A hinged flap was made, lifted by an airbag and battery-powered tyre pump. The client approaches the toilet with the footrest hinged up. When seated, she flips the flap down, drags her feet up the sloping flap, operates the battery-powered tyre inflator to raise the flap to the horizontal.

The client frequently soaks her feet whilst using this, so an additional support (not shown) to hold a bowl of water was made.

The benefit

The client can now use her toilet un-assisted and in comfort.
