Wheelchair Weighing Platform
A wheelchair user needed to be accurately weighed before chemotherapy so the dose could be compounded. Currently this was conducted at the hospital and she generally had to wait 2 hours for the therapy dose to be compounded. She requested REMAP to make some scales to enable her weight to be measured at home, thus avoiding the long wait at the hospital.
The Challenge
The client found it difficult to wait extended periods unnecessarily at a hospital, this avoided that need.
The solution
The scales were attached to a platform made from 12mm ply, retained in a manner as to not influence the measurement. Screw jacks were positioned at each corner so that the platform was suspended above the scales until the wheelchair was loaded. After the wheelchair was loaded, the jacks could be unscrewed so that the platform then rested on the scales for the measurement to be made. This wheelchair empty weight could then be stored in the scales system and then the occupant could sit in the wheelchair so her weight could be measured. Folding ramps were fitted to the platform to aid access and then be folded after the wheelchair was installed to retain the chair on the platform.

The benefit
The client and carer’s time at the hospital could be minimised during a very stressful period.
