Bespoke Cutlery
This was a project that involved the creation of customised cutlery supports for two clients. The primary client initiated the request via the carer and the second client was in the same care home with similar needs, and so the second client was added to this project. Four spoons and four fork supports (two for each client) were 3D printed using durable ABS material, featuring embossed branding for future contact.
The Challenge
The primary challenge was ensuring effective communication and project management, given that the primary client had difficulty using a computer. This reliance on his carer, raised concerns about potential communication issues if the carer were to change during the project. Additionally, the need for accurate measurements and design specifications for the cutlery supports added complexity.
The solution
A thorough approach was taken, beginning with an initial visit to assess the existing cutlery supports and gather necessary measurements. Collaboration with the original designer, a Surrey panel member, provided valuable insights into the design process. The decision was made to 3D print the new supports from ABS material, which is more resilient than the original Polycarbonate. The embossed “REMAP” branding on the supports ensured that the client could easily access future assistance.
The benefit
The successful delivery of the custom cutlery supports, enhanced the clients’ ability to eat independently, significantly improving their quality of life. The use of durable materials ensures longevity, while the branding allows for easy future contact. The project also fostered collaboration and communication among various stakeholders, paving the way for potential expansions or similar projects for other clients with similar needs.
