Jetty Ramp
The Client, who has dementia and reduced mobility, required a ramp for accessing the main jetty from his houseboat. Previous ramp solutions have proven inadequate due to their inability to adapt to changing tides.
The Challenge
The primary challenge is to design a ramp that accommodates the tidal fluctuations, which can cause strain and instability in existing setups. The Client’s current folding ramp struggles with these changes, leading to detachment and making it difficult for both him and his caregivers to use.
Additionally, the nearby fixed jetty presents complications, such as gaps that trap the wheels of the Client’s wheelchair and a tight turn that hinders access.
The solution
The proposed solution is a single-piece ramp that can be securely anchored on to the side of the boat, allowing it to adjust to changing tide levels. This ramp should incorporate a hinge and a fold-down end piece to manage the gap at the jetty side.
The design aims to enhance stability during tidal fluctuations while ensuring ease of use for the Client and his caregivers.
The benefit
The implementation of this new ramp design provided several benefits.
First, its enhanced safety by minimising the risk of detachment during use, thereby reducing strain on both the Client and his caregivers.
Second, the ramp’s ability to adjust to tidal changes significantly improved accessibility, allowing for smooth transitions between the boat and jetty. This fostered greater independence for the Client, enhancing his quality of life and making daily activities less cumbersome.
Overall, the solution’s aim was to create a more reliable and user-friendly access point, ensuring that the Client can navigate his environment with confidence.
