Rutland trolley adaptation
The project to adapt the client’s Rutland trolley shows the importance of personalised solutions in assistive technology. By addressing the specific challenges she faced, the team were able to implement a successful solution that involved widening the trolley’s legs. Despite initial concerns about altering the trolley’s integrity, effective collaboration among the engineering team, the referrer, and the client led to a favourable outcome. The modifications resulted in enhanced mobility and independence for the client, illustrating the critical role of tailored solutions in improving the lives of individuals with mobility challenges.
The Challenge
The client faced significant challenges with her Rutland trolley, which was not adequately meeting her needs due to its narrow base. After a stroke, she required a mobility aid that could safely carry her personal items while allowing her to navigate her environment comfortably. The existing trolley posed limitations, as its design did not provide enough space for her feet, leading to concerns about stability and ease of use. Modifying the trolley’s structure presented additional complications, as there were reservations about altering its integrity and obtaining the necessary permissions from the equipment provider, NRS.
The solution
To address the client’s needs, an assessment was conducted to determine the best approach for modifying the trolley. It was decided to widen the legs of the trolley, which would allow for improved stability and comfort without compromising the trolley’s functionality. The engineering team evaluated the feasibility of this modification while ensuring that it complied with safety standards. Throughout the process, clear communication was maintained with the referrer and the client, ensuring that all parties were involved in the decision-making and approval processes. The finished modifications were completed and well-received by the client, enhancing her overall experience with the trolley.
The benefit
The successful adaptation of the client’s trolley provided numerous benefits, significantly improving her mobility and independence. By widening the trolley, she gained the necessary space to manoeuvre her feet comfortably without risking interference with the wheels, thereby enhancing her safety. This modification allowed her to carry personal care items and medication more effectively, ensuring she had everything she needed within reach. The enhancements not only improved the trolley’s usability but also positively impacted her quality of life, allowing her to navigate her home and daily activities with greater ease and confidence.
