Dual Wheelchairs
The client had two disabled teenaged boys, both who required wheelchairs, and they wished to be able to push both chairs with one pusher. REMAP connected the two wheelchairs together so that they could both be pushed with one person.
The Challenge
Individual parents wish to be able to push both teenaged boys in their wheelchairs at the same time. The boys are not able to manually forge that linkage. No commercial solutions are available. The linked wheelchairs need to be completely stable, linked reasonably close together to minimise obstructing other people, easy to control and manoeuvre. Also the wheelchairs need to be easy to fold with a minimum of detachable items and any such items can be readily detached.
The solution
Both wheelchairs need clamping members fitted so that the linkage between the wheelchairs can be attached, these need to be securely locked and sufficiently strong to take the side loads of the linkage. Thread lock using M8 fasteners, aluminium angle and plate, M10 clamping shafts and tightening knobs were used with 25mm square 2mm wall aluminium tube for the connecting members. Castors were mounted again using aluminium 25mm square tube, M10 clamping shafts and tightening knobs on angled brackets on the wheelchair. Castors are required to raise the rear wheels of the leading wheelchair off the ground to aid manoeuvrability of the assembled wheelchairs.
The benefit
Sole client can now push both teenaged boys in their wheelchairs at the same time, easily and have great fun
