Our client’s Occupational Therapist had asked for a four-wheeled walker leased from Medequip to be adapted to enable our client to have the mobility to safely walk to the local shops.

Following a stroke in 2008, our client has suffered from weakness in his left hand which prevents him operating the brake lever on that side of the walker. This makes the walker very difficult to steer and unsafe to use on the unevenly surfaced route to and from the local shops.

The solution

Dave Chartres of the York panel provided a solution which combined the two brake cables so that both wheel brakes would be operated by just the right-hand lever. This was done by fitting a cable doubler supplied by Problem Solvers of Minnesota, USA imported by St John Street Cycles, Bridgwater among others. The other addition apart from a few more cable clips was a new longer brake cable to reach from the left-hand wheel brake to the right-hand brake lever. The original cable for the left-hand side was left in position and can be reconnected should the walker need to be returned to two-handed operation in the future.

The solution was achieved in a very short time and both our client and his Occupational Therapist were very happy with the result.

The benefit

Our client is now better equipped to get himself to and from the local shops which would give him important freedom and exercise.
