The Challenge
The client faces significant mobility challenges after suffering a stroke that has weakened his right side, particularly affecting his ability to use the brakes on his four-wheeled walker. This limitation not only hinders his independence but also poses safety risks while navigating various environments. The necessity for the client to operate both brakes using only his left hand creates a complex issue, as he lacks the strength to engage the right brake effectively. Addressing this challenge requires an innovative solution that accommodates his needs and enhances his ability to manoeuvre the walker safely and confidently.
The solution
To address the client’s challenges, a 3D-printed mechanism was developed to reroute the brake cables, allowing both brakes to be operated from a single lever on the left side of the walker. This cable doubler device simplifies the braking process for the client, enabling him to engage both brakes with minimal effort. During a joint visit with an occupational therapist (OT), the specific requirements were assessed to ensure that the solution would be effective. The modified walker was then delivered to the client, with the OT providing oversight and final approval of the adaptations made.
